Urgent Care Q & A

What is urgent care?

Urgent care provides prompt diagnosis and treatment of minor injuries and acute illnesses.

Many people visit the emergency room (ER) if they have a non-life-threatening medical emergency, but that isn’t the best approach. ERs are expensive and see patients based on their level of need, so you might have to wait hours to meet with a provider.

Telehealth urgent care lets you meet with Dr. Thomas from anywhere with a secure internet connection. That saves you time and money and ensures you receive treatment exactly when needed.

Which injuries and illnesses benefit from urgent care?

At JST 24-hour Telemedicine Services, Dr. Thomas uses urgent care to treat various minor illnesses and injuries, including:

  • Cold and flu
  • COVID-19
  • Dehydration
  • Severe cough
  • Sore throat
  • Pink eye
  • Minor fractures (broken bones)
  • Sprains and strains
  • Car accident injuries, like whiplash
  • Cuts with minimal bleeding
  • Allergies
  • Mild musculoskeletal pain
  • Asthma

You might benefit from urgent care if you have gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.

What happens during a telemedicine urgent care appointment?

Dr. Thomas reviews your medical records and asks about your symptoms, including when they started, how they feel, and whether they improve with at-home treatments like rest and over-the-counter medication. Next, she completes an exam.

A telehealth exam varies depending on your symptoms. For example, if you have a sore throat, Dr. Thomas might ask you to open your mouth and point your web camera at it so she can check your throat for redness and inflammation. If you sprained your ankle, she might ask you to show her your ankle so she can assess it for bruising and swelling.

Most acute illnesses and injuries can be diagnosed with telehealth. However, if you need additional tests, Dr. Thomas refers you to a nearby lab or clinic to undergo screens like urinalysis, bloodwork, or a throat swab.

How are minor illnesses and injuries treated?

At JST 24-hour Telemedicine Services, LLC, Dr. Thomas treats minor illnesses and injuries with a conservative and integrative approach. She could suggest:

  • Wearing a cast or splint
  • Getting plenty of rest
  • Drinking plenty of fluids
  • Prescription antiviral medication
  • Prescription antibiotics
  • Eating a balanced, nutritious diet
  • Stretches and strengthening exercises

Most injuries and illnesses benefit from several treatments and heal within 7-14 days.* If your symptoms continue or worsen, contact Dr. Thomas. She can adjust your care plan as needed.
